The Best Books of 2019

This year I polished off 37 books (I think… I may have missed some since I’m terrible at tracking my reading…) and with the end of the year comes all those questions of which ones my favourite. So on the last day of 2019 I’m counting down the ten best books I read this year.

The Raven Boys

X. In tenth place is The Raven Boys. I re-read the first two and read the last two this year, diving back into Henrietta with Blue and her Raven Boys. The first one is by far my favourite, The Dream Thieves always felt a bit like a random spin off to their Welsh King aims, the Raven King felt a bit scatty and Blue Lily Lily Blue was a tad slow. But The Raven Boys is just an excellent read.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone

9. Ninth place was Daughter of Smoke and Bone, and doesn’t it just make you want to travel to Prague?! I also manage to read Strange the Dreamer and Muse of Nightmares this year so there’s been a bit of a Laini Taylor theme.

Circe

8. 2019 saw my first step into audiobooks as I picked up this Greek myth telling, stringing together tales of the Titan goddess Circe following her banishment. Interacting with Greek gods, monsters, heroes and royalty Circe tales is never dull and I loved following this strange character on her voyage of self discovery.

A Curse So Dark and Lonely

7. From Harper’s determined spirit to Ren’s hopelessness to Grey’s detached warrior personality, A Curse So Dark and Lonely easily makes the top ten cut. I loved this crazy tale and can’t wait to read it’s sequel.

Heartless

6. Who doesn’t want to watch a noble daughter slowly descend into a vengeful queen?! This book made me immensely hungry with all the baking, love the terrible Queen of Hearts, and constantly kept me on the edge of my seat as I pondered how Cath could become so evil.

Becoming

5. Possibly the first autobiography I’ve ever read I followed Michelle Obama into the White House as she detailed her life as wife to the President of the United States. I learnt about both the American political system and got an insight into what Michelle Obama did with the position she and her husband earnt.

Into the Crooked Places

4. Having loved To Kill a Kingdom I was pleased to see that Christo second novel didn’t disappoint. I raced through the arc in a matter of days and it has easily earnt the position of my fourth favourite read of the year.

A Conjuring of Light

3. Bottom three and it’s the stella ending to an excellent series. I read both A Conjuring of Light and A Gathering of Shadows this year and both were excellent. I just really looking forward to that shades of magic spin off coming soon!

One of Us is Lying & Two Can Keep A Secret

2. I’m going to cheat a little but I honestly can’t pick. I raced through One of Us is Lying, finding the characters weirdly compelling and the writing style quick to read, but found the plot and ending a tad predictable. I was less invested in the character in Two Can Keep a Secret but that ending. My days. I didn’t see it coming at all and I am still reeling in shock.

Vengeful and Vicious

1. Number one and I’m cheating a tad (again) and whacking the series on there. It’s been a VE Schwab filled year as I polished of both her villains and Shades of Magic series. I loved them both and am going to have to put Eli and Victor and the various shades of their co-conspirators first. Both novels had me gripped and I couldn’t stop reading either.
