10 Authors You Should All Try

Standing in the library, admiring the rows of glossy covers and plastic coated hardbacks, flicking through to the odd front page or blurb, a handful of thoughts flutter through my mind. Has the book been passed around the limelight of the book blogging world, would the cover photo well on Bookstagram, if I can ever get this silly plastic coating off, does it sound good, do I like the author, is there a castle in it… Then I usually get distracted and think about castles for a bit, but you get the picture. In fact, I am now pretty distracted, as I’m sure you are too.

The point (although subtly told) is that there are some authors I will always just read. They’re so good their new books get the priveldge of entering my tbr just from reputation alone. And here, for Top Ten Tuesday, is a nice list of ten of my auto-loan (because we’re in a library, not a bookshop, get with it people) authors.

VE Schwab

1 If you follow me here, Bookstagram or Twitter you’ll know that 50% of what I talk about is A Darker Shade of Magic. And the other 50% is castles and chocolate milkshakes. Let’s not get get distracted again here, people. I recently brought Vicious, featured in this post, and I just hope this fabulous author doesn’t let me down.

Laini Taylor

2 Between the captivating worlds of Strange the Dreamer and Daughter of Smoke and Bone I will pretty much pick up anything Taylor writes.

Alwyn Hamiliton

3 Can we just have another rebellion, set in a dessert, full of guns and power and captivating legends that crush you inside because it’s the tragic tale of your favourite character. Actually, maybe I don’t want another Alwyn Hamilton book…

Maggie Steivfater

4 I say I’d read anything by her, since I absolutely loved The Raven Boys and feel like a committed fan given I waited 4 hours to get my copy signed, but I’ve heard her other books aren’t as good. Oh well, I’ll probably try them anyway.

Angie Thomas

5 The Hate U Give was so important and well written, I’ll read literally anything Thomas writes. Except maybe a shopping list.

Rick Riordan

6 My go to when I need a good laugh and happy reminder of my childhood favourite. Wouldn’t it be amazing if we got a book for older readers about demigods at university? Anyone else think that would be cool?

Alexandra Christo

7 After loving To Kill a Kingdom I’m officially a big fan of Christo’s writing. And her next book, which I can’t actually remember what it’s about, sounded good. I think.

Suzanne Collins

8 Remember how we all loved The Hunger Games and were heart broken by Mockingjay and then a successful set of films were made and, thank goodness, Collins didn’t start adding random stuff or making spin offs to the point of stupidly? Well now, in this slightly confusing and not particularly accurate tale, we’re getting a prequel! And yes, I am more than ready to have my heart broken again from this incredible author. But please, be gentle.

Brigid Kimmet

9 I mean, preferably it would be the sequel to A Curse so Dark and Lonely but I’ll take what I get. Her stories are excellent.

Madeline Miller

X Because Greek myth retellings are just too cool to not read more of. Also we’ve not gone Roman Numerals because it’s topical, it’s because it would only let me enlarge one letter and the giant 1 in 10 looked odd. Silly WordPress blocks.

Let’s Compare Notes

And there you have it! 10 Authors I would snatch of the book shelf, any day of the read, whack on my tbr and promptly forget I ever had interest in their novels. Who’s on your list? Do you share any of mine? What do you think of my nice new blocks formatting? Love to hear from you in the comments!

  1. I’ve loved The Archived and The Near Witch by Victoria, but I haven’t read any of her adult novels and I know I definitely should! I also LOVE Alexandra Christo and she’s an auto-buy for me after To Kill a Kingdom. 😊 I also used to say Rick Riordan’s my favorite author after LOVING Percy Jackson and The Heroes of Olympus, but his newer books haven’t been for me, and I find that really sad. Fantastic list, lovely!

    1. Ooh I want to try more books by VE Schwab as I’ve only read ADSOM, although I’ve heard her other books aren’t as good 😣 yessss To Kill a Kingdom is so good, I’m so excited for her next book! Yeah same! I think I might have grown out of them? I quite liked Magnus Chase but didn’t enjoy Trials of Apollo 😣 thanks!

  2. I absolutely adored Circe and keep meaning to pick up Song of Achilles. I could only think up four for my post but now, seeing authors like Laini Taylor and Angie Thomas cropping up on other people’s list, I’m realising I have more than I originally thought!!

  3. Great list! Schwab is so good! I haven’t read Laini yet – I can’t believe I’m saying that but it’s true. I really need to soon. I have some of her books. It’s a disgrace that I haven’t read anything by her yet LOL

  4. Great list, and I love your library analogy, because same. Speaking of Suzanne Collins though I want to read some of her older stuff too – I feel like the Underland Chronicles might be hidden gems!

  5. Two of the authors I love will never publish again – Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams. I used to love Dan Brown, Jeffrey Archer, Micheal Chrichton and John Grisham too but seem to have grown out of the fandom now😐 JK Rowling with the Potter series is another artist but I haven’t been enjoying her screenplay releases or the detective stories she writes under the Galbraith pen name..

      1. Yeah, I used to love their books a few years back but now I’m more drawn to fantasy or drama.. which is why I can’t call them my auto-buy authors anymore 😏

  6. I hope you enjoy Vicious! I’m planning on reading Vengeful soon and I’m so excited, it’s been a while since I last read a VE Schwab book. Laini Taylor is a bit hit and miss for me, I enjoyed Daughter of Smoke and Bone, but the second book wasn’t as good, and I’ve been struggling with Strange The Dreamer, I like it, but I’m not sure I’m entirely following it! I’m excited to see what Alwyn Hamilton does next and I’m super excited for Maggie Stiefvater’s next book, the first in a new trilogy following Ronan from The Raven Boys. It makes me sad that I don’t love Rick Riordan’s books as much as I used to, but I suppose it was always bound to happen. I loved To Kill A Kingdom and Alexandra Christo’s next book sounds great too. I’m going to give The Hate U Give another try because I did enjoy the movie, but not yet.

    1. I hope so too! Ooh tell me what you think. Ooh that’s interesting, do you find it confusing then? I really liked Strange the Dreamer but I would say to read it all at once, since I read it quite quickly and that made it easy to follow. Muse of Nightmares is more confusing tbh. Yeah I want Alwyn Hamilton to write something else, she seems to have disappeared a bit 😭 I knew Maggie Steifvater was doing a Ronan book but I don’t know if I’ll read it tbh since I wasn’t a massive Ronan fan tbh 😳 yeah I’m sad Rick Riordan is a but legacy for me but I’ll always look at his new books before deciding they’re not for me, hopefully he’s writing something for his older readers. Yeah I can’t wait for Christos next book it sounds amazing. THUG isn’t fantasy and doesn’t have much action until the end, it’s a lot like To Kill a Mockingbird tbh so possibly not your thing!

      1. I will definitely, I started it today! I did yeah, I’ve just finished it and honestly I would struggle to explain the plot to someone else. I think part of it is me being really busy at work too though, it’s hard to find the time to read. I don’t think I’ll read Muse of Nightmares. She’s coming out with a new book next year (but you know that now, since I am super late with this comment!). Fair enough. Ah it would be great if he did.
